The tyrant's mask.
In a twilight realm, where reality disintegrates under the grip of fantasy, Munstrum Théâtre, a particularly inventive Alsatian company whose Les Possédés d'Illfurth we welcomed three seasons ago, delivers a gripping retelling of Macbeth. Faithful to its hybrid universe of theater, masks and puppets, the company transcends Shakespeare's tragedy to reveal all its hallucinatory madness. Under Louis Arene's direction, the figures of power take on grotesque, disquieting allure, while the three witches become strange, protean entities, sculpting the fate of the doomed couple. Bodies metamorphose, faces freeze into disproportionate rictus, and bloodshed is imprinted in a grandiose scenography. With an aesthetic at the crossroads of Baroque and Expressionist cinema, this Makbeth revisited takes us into a waking nightmare, where illusion and fatality intertwine until the tyrant's inevitable downfall.
