Simon Quarry

Located between Forbach, Schoeneck, and Stiring-Wendel, the Simon Quarry is a site spanning nearly 87 hectares, which was once operated by the Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine for coal mining. It is now a remarkable site with a stunning panoramic view, overlooking a newly forming artificial lake.

It was at the summit of Hérapel Hill, at an altitude of 330 m, that the ancient Gallo-Roman city of Cocheren was located. As early as the 18th century, excavations uncovered a necropolis. In the 19th century, extensive excavations revealed the remains of a Late Empire enclosure.

Holy Cross Chapel

“Rooted in the rock, it has defied time, centuries of turmoil, centuries of solitude, moments of peace.” This 13th-century Gothic chapel is the only monument in the city of Forbach classified in 1937.
